Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Substance Use

On-Demand, Self-Paced Course
3CE’s

This activity is designed to present psychologists and practitioners with a novel treatment approach to working with clients who suffer with substance use. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Training (ACT) has been shown to be effective in SUD treatment through acceptance of urges and misuse of substances by promoting psychological flexibility, which reduces symptoms and increases committed actions.

Participants will learn how to conduct an ACT-consistent nonjudgmental assessment of substance use behaviors to facilitate case conceptualization and treatment.

Dr. Polk and Mr. Tenaglia will discuss and illustrate how ACT uses creative hopelessness with clients to identify the costs of behaviors that fuel addiction. They will also demonstrate how to engage clients struggling with substance use in a process that promotes committed actions based on their chosen values.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe how to use the ACT process to notice stuck emotional/behavioral loops that fuel addiction.
  • Participants will be able to implement a nonjudgmental assessment of substance use behaviors.
  • Participants will demonstrate how to engage clients with problematic substance use in the ACT values and committed actions process.
